I completed my PhD at the University of Victoria, Canada examining the role of neuropeptides in metabolism. I became interested in obesity and diabetes during my PhD and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge with Dr. Antonio Vidal-Puig and Prof. Stephen O’Rahilly. In Toni’s lab I characterized a mouse line harboring a dominant negative mutation in PPARgamma. This work identified adipose tissue expandability as an important factor for the development of insulin resistance in the context of positive energy balance.

I continued my training with the Diabetes Research Group at the University of British Columbia with Dr. Tim Kieffer. I am now an assistant professorship in the Northern Medical Program at the University of Northern British Columbia. My current research focus examines the effect of obesity on the pancreatic -cell, with a specific interest in beta-cell lipotoxicity and adipokine regulation of beta-cell function.
